When we see a patient who has suffered from periodontal disease, one remedy we suggest is gum reshaping. You may think of gum reshaping as a purely cosmetic procedure; however, the truth of the matter is that it can be a vital part of the treatment regimen to prevent further damage from periodontal disease.
Gum Reshaping Can Help Limit Future Problems
One thing that can make periodontal disease so troublesome is the way it develops. If your issue has progressed beyond gingivitis, there is a good chance that you have developed pockets below the gum line. These pockets can pose a very troublesome challenge because they provide a ready-made spot for food, bacteria, and other debris to collect. There, safely beyond the reach of your toothbrush, this detritus can begin to fester and decay, leading to even more problems.
Sadly, once a patient's periodontitis passes a certain point, the pockets will not close up again. This means the patient will always struggle with keeping that area clean.
Gum reshaping can help with this. We use a precision tool to reduce the excess gum in the area, effectively eliminating the pocket and helping the remaining gum tissue to seal itself back up against the tooth. This, in turn, makes it easier to keep things clean going forward.
Is Gum Reshaping Right for You?
Many of our patients are more than a little hesitant to undergo the gum reshaping procedure. Fear of surgery is one reason for this.
Let us assure you that this is a simple and relatively easy process. You can have the procedure done and be back to your normal self in a very short time.
